Parents and Guardians,
Please be on the lookout for an Health & Counseling Services OPT-OUT form that will be sent home with every BGISD student tomorrow 9/3/2025. As part of Senate Bill 12, passed in the latest legislative session, parents now have the right to opt their child out of counseling and health-related services provided at school.
Each form will include a detailed list of the standard services our nurses and counselors provide on campus.
These include:
Routine Health-Related Services
-
First aid and injury evaluation
-
Administration of over-the-counter and prescription medications (per law)
-
Monitoring of chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes)
-
Vision, hearing, scoliosis, lice, and acanthosis screenings
-
Under the influence assessment
-
Support during illness or physical symptoms at school
-
Coordination of health services
-
Heat illness prevention and injury support for student athletes
Counseling Services (by school counselors)
-
Short-term individual counseling or check-ins
-
Student-success needs assessment (academic/behavior support, not for diagnostic purposes)
-
Social-emotional skill building or group counseling
-
Support during emotional distress or crisis (including assessments following concerns of self-harm or harm to others)
-
Behavioral observations and problem-solving
-
Referrals to outside providers, if needed (with parent consent)
Important Notes:
-
If you wish to opt your child out of these services, the form must be completed and returned to the front office of your child’s campus.
-
There is NO need to opt in. If a form is not returned, these services will continue to be provided to your child as needed.
We ask that you carefully review the form when it comes home with your student tomorrow. Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us keep our students safe, healthy, and supported.
