MEMORANDUM
| TO: | Blooming Grove ISD Students & Parents |
| FROM: | George McFarland |
| RE: | Optional Flexible Year Program (OFYP) for Secondary Campuses |
| DATE: | 05/19/2010 |
The purpose of this communication is to inform the BGISD secondary school student body and all parental support systems of changes that will take place in the 2010-2011 school year calendar.
The Blooming Grove ISD has applied for and successfully received permission from the state of Texas to partake in the Optional Flexible Year Program. The OFYP authorizes school districts to alter the required number of instructional days that schools must offer class from 180 days to 170 days for qualifying students without losing funding in the process. In order to apply, school districts must submit documentation to the Texas Education Agency outlining the school district’s plan to offer concentrated instruction to students that have failed or are in danger of failing the state assessment test (TAKS), or that have not met the other stipulations that the district has set up in formulating its student requirements to be eligible to participate in the OFYP. This intensive instruction would occur for these students during the period of up to 10 days that the district has designated as its “Flex” days. Blooming Grove ISD plans to implement 8 “Flex” days into the 2010-2011 school calendar accounting for the last 8 days of the 180 day school year. This would allow Blooming Grove Students that qualify to legally miss the last eight days of school. In order to qualify for being out of school on the designated “Flex” days, Blooming Grove students would:
- Be required to pass all portions of their TAKS tests
- Have no grade lower than an 80 in any class for the year’s average
- Have no more than 8 total absences, excused or unexcused, for the school year
- Have no assignments to ISS or the DAEP, or have not been suspended from school or the bus
- *Have passed all the latest TAKS benchmarks- this information would be used in lieu of actual TAKS scores if the school district had not yet received the actual scores prior to the beginning of the “Flex” days
The district has pursued implementing the OFYP in order to improve student academic performance both in class and on the TAKS tests, improve school attendance, and promote a safe and orderly learning environment by reducing campus disciplinary issues. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the program.
