Dress and Grooming
2009-2010
The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
- Students shall be dressed and groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not be a health or safety hazard to themselves or others. The District prohibits any clothing or grooming that in the principal's judgment may reasonably be expected to cause disruption of or interference with normal school operations.
- The District prohibits pictures, emblems, or writings on clothing that:
- Are lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene, or gang related.
- Advertise or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance prohibited under Blooming Grove ISD Board Policy FNCF(L).
- The District also prohibits:
- Tank tops or muscle shirts or sleeveless shirts or cut out sleeves
- Mesh or see-through clothing
- Midriff revealing tops are prohibited. A student’s midriff or lower back should not be
visible for while the student is in any position (i.e. standing, sitting, with hands raised
above the head).
- Extremely tight fitting clothing
- Spaghetti strap tops or dresses (strap should be a minimum width of your 4 fingers) or
dresses with open backs.
- Flip Flops, shower shoes, or house shoes.
- Hats, caps, sweat bands or bandanas (any head covering) inside the buildings
(these items must be left at home or in vehicle)
- Mini skirts without colored leotards or opaque stockings
- Ear rings or make-up worn by male students
- Visible body piercing including the tongue, spacers, straws, paper clips or safety pins
(or any other foreign object) except females with earrings
- Facial hair (beards, goatees, or mustaches, sideburns my not extend below ear lobe)
- Hair, in addition to meeting hygiene standards, must not conceal any facial features.
- Male hair length must be cut so that it may not incidentally fall into the eyes or pose a
safety threat due to length in any other fashion as well.
- The wearing of baggy or sagging pants or pants that are pulled down below the hips is not permissible at school or any related event. Clothes must be YOUR body size.
- Pants with holes or frayed hems (tape is not a permissible solution to this problem)
- Visible tattoos including non permanent body art
- Pajamas or flannel pants or any type of sleepwear.
- Sun glasses worn inside the building without a doctor’s prescription
- Wearing hoods up on sweatshirts or jackets
- Chains, metal loops or large zippers on body or as a part of clothing
- Other Dress and Grooming Considerations:
- Appropriate undergarments should be worn at all times not visible to public
- Males- must have shirts tucked inside of the pants (all the way around) at all times &
belts must be worn with pants designed for a belt; loops may not be removed.
- Hair, in addition to meeting hygiene standards, must not conceal any facial features.
- Male hair length must be cut so that it is off the ears and above the eyebrow and
may not extend below the collar combed straight down.
- Hair color must be of a natural color; i.e. may not be pink, blue, green, etc.
- Students will be allowed to wear walking type shorts in grades 9-12. Short shorts, tight-fitting/bicycle type shorts, wind shorts, athletic, or mesh/layered type shorts are prohibited. For guidance and enforcement purposes shorts will have to measure no more than two inches above the middle of the kneecap while standing. This also applies to dresses. Dresses that are shorter than the two- inch requirement must be worn with colored leotards or opaque stockings, determination of inappropriate dress will be made by the campus principal. V-necks or low cleavage clothing will be monitored by female staff and reported to the office as a dress code violation for inappropriate school attire subject to the same consequences as other dress code violations.
- Proper undergarments should be worn at all times. Outerwear may not be used to disguise dress code violations. The student and parent may determine the student's personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the general guidelines set out above and the discipline management plan. If the principal determines that a student's grooming violates the dress code, the student may be sent home and an unexcused absence may be given or otherwise removed from the general student population. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action. Appropriate discipline procedures shall be followed in all cases.
- The Principal, in connection with the sponsor, coach, or other person in charge of an extra-curricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. Students who violate those standards may be removed or excluded from the activity for a period determined by the principal and sponsor and may be subject to other disciplinary action.
- The discipline management plan concerning dress code is progressive in nature with a focus on students being appropriately dressed for their educational day as determined by the Blooming Grove ISD. The discipline for students that have dress/grooming code violations that are not correctible by adjustments made here on campus will focus on the students being removed from the general student population for the day, either by being sent home to correct the problem or being assigned ISS.
- In all instances involving possible violations of the campus dress/grooming policy, the principal will ultimately determine the appropriateness for the campus and the discipline required.
